Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel to appear as keynote speaker at Annual Taubman Institute Symposium in Ann Arbor
October 16, 2009
Ezekiel Emanuel – a key figure in the Obama Administration – will be the keynote speaker at a University of Michigan Symposium on October 16, which will focus on the theme: “A New Era in Medicine.”
From changes in health care to stem cell research, medicine is on the verge of a paradigm shift which promises to have profound effects on all aspects of the profession. Dr. Emanuel’s talk will look at one important aspect of these changes: “The Physician-Patient Relationship in the Future.”
Dr. Emanuel is the Chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health. He is currently serving as special advisor to the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget for health policy, advising the Obama administration on health care reform.
His brothers are White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Hollywood-based superagent Ari Emanuel.
He has written frequently for the popular and scientific press on a variety of topics including health care reform, research ethics, end-of-life care issues and the physician-patient relationship. His book on medical ethics, The Ends of Human Life, has been widely praised.
Also speaking at the Symposium:
Kenneth J. Pienta, director of MICHR, who will explain how his organization helps U-M researchers accelerate the pace of medical discovery.
Taubman Scholar David Pinksy, who will share his research on preventing and limiting the damage of strokes.
Emerging Scholar James Dowling, who will describe his work on childhood muscle diseases.
The Symposium is jointly sponsored by the University of Michigan’s A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute and the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR).
