Every November, National Philanthropy Day is observed by Association of Fundraising Professionals Chapters across the country to recognize people active in the philanthropic community. The Greater Detroit Chapter will hold its 20th Annual National Philanthropy Day Dinner on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center. The event is hosted by Henry Ford Health System and presented by Crain’s Detroit Business.
Award recipients have been selected based on their exceptional philanthropic contributions and commitment to enhancing Southeastern Michigan:
The Max M. Fisher Award for Outstanding Philanthropist will be presented to A. Alfred Taubman and the Taubman Family for exceptional philanthropic generosity and commitment to many non-profits in the Southeastern Michigan. The Taubman Family most recently committed an $11 million gift for the construction of the A. Alfred Taubman Engineering, Architecture and Life Sciences Center at Lawrence Technological University. In April 2011, Taubman became the largest individual donor in the history of the University of Michigan with a gift of $56 million that will go to the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute and endowment.
The Edmund T. Ahee Jewel Award for Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser will be presented to Anthony and Catherine Viviano for their tireless support of Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals, The March of Dimes, the Macomb County Marine Division and many other local charities.
The Neal Shine Award for Media Commitment to Philanthropy will be presented to Rochelle Riley, Detroit Free Press, for her focus on building communities, demonstrating a consistent ethical foundation, and showing a commitment to making metropolitan Detroit a better place to live.
The George W. Romney Award for Lifetime Achievement in Volunteerism will be presented to Phillip Fisher of The Fisher Group for his many years of volunteering for various nonprofit organizations. Currently his focus is on mission-related investing, and through this work he has become a respected advocate for the effective application of capitalistic systems for the benefit of philanthropy… Read more here.
