And who do you think paid the $5.7 million tab for building the Keith Center?
Not the government. Not a dime of taxpayer money went into the construction. Not Wayne State — universities are too cash-strapped today to fund such ambitious projects.

The state Senate wants to include regulations in next year's higher education budget that would make universities file annual reports on stem cell research and religious freedom. Bringing the schools to heel on those issues probably fits the personal agendas of some, but it's a costly indulgence. Make-work mandates feed bureaucratic sprawl and defy Gov. Rick Snyder's effort to streamline government.
